Aromatherapy Hack
As I spent the day going through my home washing bedding and blankets and checking the furnace filter (the fall pollen has hit our house) I remembered a hack that I learned a few years back when I started my aromatherapy studies.
You may not have any allergy issues but this hack can be used in other situations as well.
If you have access to your furnace filter you can put a few drops of an essential oil on the filter and allow the aroma to gently make its way throughout your home. Keep in mind to make sure that the oils you choose are safe for all in the home, that includes pets, children, and anyone with health issues.
Pets are very sensitive to oils, the smell and topical use. In order to know if your pet likes a smell, all you need to do is remove the cap from the bottle of essential oil, stand about 6 feet away from them and see how your pet reacts.
Positive reaction: comes closer to you, licks their lips, shows positive body language that means they like it.
Negative reaction: They do nothing, walk away, or jerk their head as they find it strong and unpleasant.
Remember that there are also essential oils that are harmful to pets such as some citrus oils and more. Never put oils directly on your pet. Generally a few drops into the furnace filter will not be harmful to pets.
I often use this hack at night to aid in a peaceful sleep. Our nervous systems are able to relax more with the aid of essential oils. Our quality of sleep is deepened. Which oils you choose can support the immune system as well.
Tonight I was called to put a few drops of lemon and lavender on our filter. Our whole house enjoys lavender as all find it very calming. Lemon is a go to for me in calming anxiety. I intuitively have used lemon from a very young age without fully realizing why. But on this night these two oils called out to me with September being a big month of transition.
By a few I mean:
Lemon - 2 drops
Important notes:
Citrus oils are a very light liquid and will flow out of the bottle fast, so, please keep that in mind when adding your drops.
Any citrus essential oil would be a great substitute, Orange, Tangerine, Bergamot, ect. Make sure not to go overboard if you have pets.
Lavender - 3 drops
Important note:
If you are not a fan of Lavender, Geranium would be a great substitute
You don’t want it to be overpowering, less is more.
Full disclosure: I work with more natural methods because through trial and error with professionals I’ve learned that my body never responds well to pharmaceuticals. However I understand that essential oils do not take their place. All can be helpful for supporting each person's body to find balance.
You are always free to add aromatherapy to your next session to test out a scent first. This allows space for me to answer any questions you might have and I can make a personalized blend at the end of your session, if you’d like.
